This week I am going to research data collection techniques and then explore how I can visually display the data content. I need to think about what kind of data I want to gather and then move onto visualising it.
Installation inspiration
I like the idea of using an interactive installation as a way to engage users and educate them on certain topics within society. Installations are a great way to draw in people's attention the topic of interest and immerse them in an experience.
Stefan Sagmeister: The Happy Show
The Happy Show, a thematic exhibition of film, print, infographics, sculpture, and interactive installations offers visitors the experience of walking into the designer's mind as he attempts to increase his happiness via mediation, cognitive therapy, and mood-altering pharmaceuticals.
NEMO Science Museum: Sex Education Installation
The Nemo Science Museum in Amsterdam has a whole area dedicated to teaching kids about sex education through the use of interactive installations. Physical interaction intrigues the user and allows them to engage on a more personal level.
Visualising data
Before I start to think of potential ideas for an installation I want to explore the ways in which I can gather and display data.
Giorgia Lupi & Stefanie Posavec: Dear Data
Two designers who both share the same interest in gathering data decided to send each other a postcard once a week for a full year. Each week they would choose a topic in which they were both interested in and they would track the data and then visually display it on the front of the postcard. On the back they would each provide a detailed key so the other person could understand it.
Reading this book inspired me to just get started with collecting data and experiment with visualisation drawings. I want to gather data from my day to day life no matter how small or insignificant it may seem it will help me generate ideas and hopefully help towards my overall project. I also want to ask some of my friends and classmates to take part so I can see how other people respond to data visualisation.
These images are from http://www.stefanieposavec.com/ - Stefanie's website. I like the two contrasts of digital and hand drawn data. Initially I want to experiment with hand drawing my data so I can get more comfortable in generating visual data.
