Developing A1 Boards

1. Stereotyping and testing Unconscious Bias

Layout and design options

Final board

The idea is that the user will be asked to use two words (different colours) that could be used to describe each person. The words will be stuck to the board with velcro and answers will be revealed in an envelope attached to the wood at the bottom right hand side of the installation.

2. Societal Bias

Show the presence of sexism in the media and highlight the over sexualisation of women.

Final board

Users will guess the adverts by sticking post it notes on the board next to the images and the answers will be revealed in an envelope attached to the wood at the bottom right hand side of the installation.

3. Education - Allport Scale

Final board

Users will guess what goes in each section by sticking the words to the board with velcro. The answers will be revealed in an envelope attached to the wood at the bottom right hand side of the installation.

4. The Problem - Sexism

Final board

Users will work their way through each section reading the statements (but the facts will be covered). Once the users gets to the end of each section the answers will be revealed in an envelope that's attached to the installation.

5. Solution

Why it happens and how can we prevent it?

Final board

Users will get to the final section of the installation and will be asked to guess what they think causes sexism and to write down percentages next to each factor that they think contributes the most. Answers will be written down on post it notes and stuck on the board. This gives the users an opportunity to have their input and allows me to gain a better understanding on other people's perspectives on the issue. (And perhaps some feedback and an insight into how bias I may have been...)

CAD Wooden Structure

I made a wooden structure on Sketch Up to give me a better idea of how I would create the frame.

Making scale model

I made a 1:15 scale model of the installation structure using BBQ skewers to give me a better idea of how I could make it in real life.

Physical prototype

Context

I want my installation to be in a an open space so there can be a lot of people interacting with it at once. The Cooper Gallery at DJCAD provides a unique space for exhibitions and events with its dark polished hardwood floor and the curved corners of the gallery walls. I was in contact with Peter and he provided me with the floor plan. This enabled to think about the positioning of my installation within the space and gave me an idea of the scale of it in context.

Next steps:

  • Detailed storyboard

  • Great images
