Over the past week I have done a lot of desk research and looked at existing projects that aim to raise awareness and educate people surrounding the issues of sexual harassment and violence. I want to start thinking about my final concept and how I will create an interactive installation as well as continuing to gather primary research.

To help generate ideas for my final concept I used oblique strategy cards and came up with 30 ideas in 30 minutes. This was a quick way to start thinking about potential concepts without getting too wrapped up in all the details.

Idea generation

Once I had 30 ideas, I went through and selected the ones I thought had the most potential and drew them again. I decided to combine a few of the ideas and developed concepts that incorporate a variety of these elements.

Potential installation ideas

I have two main ideas at the moment, the first is an interactive installation that incorporates a variety of elements such as data visualisation sketches/images and user input activities.

The second is a storytelling experience in which the user can input information using a control panel and then relevant stories are generated and played to the user.

Installation Inspiration

HappyHere

Martin Skelly & Peter Thomas

'HappyHere' was a participatory, immersive light installation, created for Pig Rock Bothy, which used colour and light to visualise thoughts and feelings. The technology turned visitor’s answers to seven simple questions into a narrative of light and colour, featured on a custom-built screen in the installation. After dark, Pig Rock Bothy became a beacon of coloured light, replaying all of the feelings recorded by it during the day and transmitting it out into the night sky.

Combining user input with the outcome as it provides an engaging experience. In second year I created a project that incorporated the use a control panel as a way for the user to interact with the product. I like the idea of using a control panel as a way for the user to navigate through a storytelling experience.

The Happy show

Stefan Sagmeister

I have admired Sagmeister's installation for years now but I love the simplicity of it and how he uses illustrative graphics to engage the viewers. I like the idea of hand drawing the data I gather as I feel people connect more with visually represented information as opposed to text. Hand drawing gives the installation a more personal vibe.

Next steps:

  • Develop concepts and begin prototyping

  • Gather primary research
